Cathodoluminescence spectroscopy of ambipolar diffusion in (Al,Ga)As barriers and capture of nonequilibrium carriers in GaAs quantum well
Ambipolar vertical diffusion of carriers generated in an Al0.3Ga0.7As barrier is investigated by cathodoluminescence CL spectroscopy in a system containing a sequence of GaAs-based quantum wells QWs . The intensity distribution of the CL line scan exhibits a single exponential decay for the first QW of the sequence, reflecting a pure diffusion-limited transport. However, the CL line scans of the second, third, and fourth QWs are governed by diffusion only for large separations between the electron beam and the corresponding QW. For smaller distances, the CL intensity distribution is significantly influenced by the carrier capture into the intervening QWs
Evolution of a magnetic flux tube in a sunspot penumbra
The motion of an individual magnetic flux tube inside the penumbra of a sunspot is studied numerically. Here, we present preliminary results. The thin flux tube approximation together with a simplified radiative heat exchange with the surroundings is used to study the evolution of a flux tube embedded into a background given by a global magneto-static sunspot model. The investigation is undertaken in order to verify the conjecture that convection in sunspot penumbrae occurs by an interchange of magnetic flux tubes. The code being developed can be used to study dynamic aspects of filamentary structure in the penumbra: the temporal and spatial fluctuations of the temperature and the magnetic field, the motion of bright penumbral grains, or the Evershed effect. Here we present the evolution of a wave formed by the tube whose fragment emerges in the penumbral photosphere and migrates towards the umbra. The properties of this wave show qualitative features of the observed bright penumbral grains with corresponding upward velocity and its correlation with brightness and the inclination of the magnetic field, and also of the Evershed effect
A dynamical model for the penumbral fine structure and the Evershed effect in sunspots
Relying on the assumption that the interchange convection of magnetic flux
tubes is the physical cause for the existence of sunspot penumbrae, we propose
a model in which the dynamical evolution of a thin magnetic flux tube
reproduces the Evershed effect and the penumbral fine structure such as bright
and dark filaments and penumbral grains.
According to our model, penumbral grains are the manifestation of the
footpoints of magnetic flux tubes, along which hot subphotospheric plasma flows
upwards with a few km/s. Above the photosphere the hot plasma inside the tube
is cooled by radiative losses as it flows horizontally outwards. As long as the
flowing plasma is hotter than the surroundings, it constitutes a bright radial
filament. The flow confined to a thin elevated channel reaches the temperature
equilibrium with the surrounding atmosphere and becomes optically thin near the
outer edge of the penumbra.
Here, the tube has a height of approximately 100 km above the continuum and
the flow velocity reaches up to 14 km/s. Such a flow channel can reproduce the
observed signatures of the Evershed effect.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ letter
HD DVD substrates for surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy analysis : fabrication, theoretical predictions and practical performance
Commercial HD DVDs provide a characteristic structure of encoding pits which were utilized to fabricate cost efficiently large area SERS substrates for chemical analysis. The study targets the simulation of the plasmonic structure of the substrates and presents an easily accessible fabrication process to obtain highly sensitive SERS active substrates. The theoretical simulation predicted the formation of supermodes under optimized illumination conditions, which were verified experimentally. First tests of the developed SERS substrates demonstrated their excellent potential for detecting vitamin A and pro- vitamin A at low concentration levels

Abstract: Radioactive Li ions were implanted into natural IIa diamonds at temperatures between 100 K and 900 K. Emission channelling patterns of a-particles emitted in the nuclear decay of 8Li (t1/2 = 838 ms) were measured and, from a comparison with calculated emission channelling and blocking effects from Monte Carlo simulations, the lattice sites taken up by the Li ions were quantitatively determined. A fraction of 40(5)% of the implanted Li ions were found to be located on tetrahedral interstitial lattice sites, and 17(5)% on substitutional sites. The fractions of implanted Li on the two lattice sites showed no change with temperature, indicating that Li diffusion does not take place within the time window of our measurements.
